Biber vs. B-boys.
Building on a first break dance (‘breaking’) collaboration for the 2010 BBC Proms, Aurora joins forces with choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere and breakers from his dance companies, Bboy’s Attic and Company Decalage.
A typically eclectic playlist ranges from the baroque fireworks of Biber’s Battalia to Barshai’s orchestral scoring of Shostakovich’s war-themed String Quartet No. 3, and a new breakbeat arrangement of Holst’s Mars by Chris Willis. At the heart of the programme is Maxamorphosis, a major new work composed by Julian Philips and choreographed by Marso for chamber orchestra, dancers, and solo viola. Created especially for Aurora’s Principal Viola Max Baillie – a trained dancer as well as an instrumentalist – this is a concerto like no other.
Maxamorphosis was commissioned with funding from the RPS Drummond Fund and the PRS Foundation. The project is also supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation (which sponsors Aurora’s cross-art form collaborations for the New Moves series), Arts Council England, and a gift from Thomas Ponsonby.
