Peter Maxwell Davies Eight Songs for a Mad King
Beethoven Symphony No.3 in Eb major, ‘Eroica’ (performed from memory)

Aurora debuts at Festival Berlioz with a concert exploring power and madness. The orchestral evening includes Peter Maxwell Davies’ shocking Eight Songs for a Mad King that depicts the painful unravelling of a monarch’s mind, and ends with Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony of revolutionary heroism – a monumental work originally dedicated to Napoleon, but then furiously rededicated ‘to celebrate the memory of a great man’ after Beethoven became disillusioned with the leader’s loss of humanist ideals.
