Mahler (arr. Iain Farrington) Das Lied von der Erde
Andrew Staples tenor
Christianne Stotijn mezzo-soprano
Nicholas Collon conductor
Following its successful debut appearance at Musikfest Bremen in 2012, Aurora returns in 2013 with a performance of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde.
Composed between 1907-09, during a time of great personal tragedy, Mahler’s ‘Song of the Earth’ has been described as his ninth symphony – a title he purposely avoided. The fact that composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner and Dvorak wrote no more than nine symphonies each, paired with Mahler’s superstition, led to his choice of title in an attempt to outwit fate.
Tenor, Andrew Staples, and mezzo-soprano, Christianne Stotijn, join Nicholas Collon and Aurora Orchestra in a beautiful fusion of vocal and symphonic writing, which Mahler himself described as “the most personal thing I’ve ever written”.
