Pierre Boulez Le Marteau sans maître
Colin Currie percussion
Nicolas Hodges piano
Hilary Summers contralto
Franck Ollu conductor
Three classic scores that changed the face of modern music forever.
The concert opens with ‘Gesang der Jünglinge’ (‘Song of the Youths’). This was the first masterpiece of electronic music, with five tracks of recorded boy-soprano voices encircling the audience.
Southbank Centre Artist-In-Residence Colin Currie teams up with pianist Nicolas Hodges for Kontakte (‘Contacts’). The piece takes the spatial element to a new level as live sounds are picked up by rotating microphones and distributed sonically around the four corners of the hall.
By contrast, Boulez’s ‘Le Marteau sans maître’, with members of Aurora Orchestra and soprano Hilary Summers, is entirely acoustic. It is a shimmering, sensual collage of virtuoso musical incense.
