Ahead of its performance at the BBC Proms on 6 August, and as part of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival, Aurora applies its thrilling memorised performance approach to Shostakovich’s ninth symphony. Principal Conductor Nicholas Collon and BBC Radio 3’s Tom Service harness the extraordinary potential of an orchestra performing from memory to get under the skin of the symphony, using musical excerpts from the instrumentalists to guide us through its structure and musical ideas, before the orchestra performs the entire symphony by heart. Aurora is joined by Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin, making his debut at Saffron Hall as soloist in Shostakovich’s much-loved second piano concerto.

‘Marvellous… Playing from memory, Aurora created an organic sense of community, dynamism and inspiration.’ (The New York Times)
