Aurora Orchestra

Hear Us Out! / One Piece Projects

One Piece Projects enable participants to explore a core orchestral work in depth.  To enable this orchestral repertoire to be played live in schools and form the basis of projects, Aurora is commissioning a unique series of chamber arrangements for 3 musicians and for flexible instrumentation.

One Piece Projects take place in 6 to 8 sessions over a term. In sessions, Aurora players, workshop leaders and the students explore and take apart the orchestral work.  Participants then join Aurora players to work on parts of  the piece in side-by-side schemes using a mixture of original and specially commissioned parts for young people.  Participants also work together to create their own original compositions inspired by the orchestral works.

These projects culminate in final performances involving all participants performing alongside Aurora players which present a re-imagining of the orchestral works.  Original music is heard in new arrangements played by soloists, or groups and compositions inspired by the work and written by the group are also interspersed.

One Piece Projects aim to:

  • introduce participants to orchestral instruments and live music of outstanding quality
  • provide training for secondary-age students to work with primary-age participants to deliver the project
  • enable participants to explore and engage with a symphonic work
  • enable participants to work and perform alongside professional musicians
  • provide primary-age participants with role models from the music departments of local secondary schools, who will be trained to work on the project
  • give opportunities for participants to acquire the core musical skills of pulse, pitch, rhythm, musical literacy and singing
  • enable participants to compose new music in response to the symphonic work
  • provide an opportunity for a public performance, involving all participants and musicians from Aurora Orchestra.

Music Mentors
One Piece Projects involve primary and secondary schools working together through our Music Mentors scheme.  In the first few sessions, secondary participants receive training from workshop leaders and Aurora players in working with primary-age children.  The Aurora team then works alongside secondary students in primary schools to deliver the project.
