BBC Proms 2021: Stravinsky’s Firebird

Wed 11 August 2021
Royal Albert Hall
3:30pm

Aurora’s memorised performances have become an annual fixture at the Proms in recent years, with ‘by heart’ presentations of symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Berlioz. This year we’ll be harnessing the unique potential of an orchestra playing without music stands or sheet music to get inside Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite: exploring the work’s textures and themes and unpacking its intricate musical narrative with the help of Tom Service, before delivering a complete performance of the work.

The concert opens with another Russian classic: Rachmaninov’s virtuosic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Pavel Kolesnikov as soloist.

This concert is generously supported by Cockayne – Grants for the Arts and The London Community Foundation, Nicholas & Margo Snowman, Richard & Helen Sheldon and the Aurora Patrons & Friends.
