.Aurora Orchestra makes its debut at Frankfurt’s Alte Oper, joined by Abel Selacoe before a memorised performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
Aurora Orchestra, founded in London in 2005, has adopted the motto “Orchestral music for everyone”. And the musicians do indeed succeed in inspiring a wide audience – with unusual concert formats, surprising programs and a lively playing style. The musicians perform standing up, play without sheet music, they combine capoeira sounds with baroque music, tango with Bernstein, klezmer with Mahler – or South African percussion with Beethoven’s no less rhythm-driven seventh symphony, as in their debut in Frankfurt. Also taking part is the cellist, singer and composer Abel Selaocoe, who also likes to play with genre boundaries. The musician feels just as connected to his native South Africa as he does to western musical traditions. It is precisely this exciting mixture that characterises his rousing cello concerto Four Spirits.
