Mahler’s First by Heart, Saffron Hall

Wed 29 July 2026
7:30 pm, Saffron Hall

A chance to hear Mahler’s deeply autobiographical First Symphony like never before, as we dissect and reassemble the music, introducing its key elements and the story behind it before performing it entirely from memory.

‘All the floodgates within me have opened … my whole being points me towards this symphony.’ Heavily influenced by the sounds around him, from klezmer to nature, folk music to funeral marches, Mahler’s First Symphony is a true reflection of Mahler and his life in sounds. In true Aurora fashion, a dramatised first-half introduces the music and its story with mezzo-soprano Natalie Lewis, before a complete performance of the symphony from memory after the interval.
