The London musicians perform Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony with incredible intensity. At the height of the Stalinist terror, the composer wrote to assure his survival – an oppressive work that engages in a humanist dialogue with Beethoven’s bright and buoyant Violin Concerto. Alena Baeva makes her solo debut at Beethovenfest. The Kyrgyz musician was brought up in the renowned Russian violin school, but from this tradition she developed a very personal and modern sound. Fittingly, she has performed Beethoven’s standard work with both classical and historically informed orchestras. As she joins Nicholas Collon and Aurora, we can look forward to a buoyant and dynamic interpretation combining the best of both worlds.
