Beethoven: Symphony No. 5

The four-note motif that opens Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most famous phrases in musical history in a work that has become a cornerstone of the classical music canon.

This resource will look at Haydn's influence on Beethoven, and Beethoven’s increasing desire to expand the orchestra beyond the Classical norm for the purpose of greater musical power and expression, and also Beethoven's careful writing for different pairs of woodwind instruments that contribute to Beethoven’s more Romantic sound.
